waianuhea is a soothing, peaceful, and luxurious Hawaii bed and breakfast. Located in beautiful Ahualoa above the town of Honokaa on the Big Island of Hawaii, Waianuhea's Hawaii lodging combines a sense of remote retreat with modern convenience and sumptuous furnishings. We have five wonderful rooms to offer the discriminating traveler: two queen bed rooms, two large king bed rooms, and one full suite, with special large soaking tubs in the king room baths. Gas and wood stoves complement and warm the three larger rooms.

A hot gourmet breakfast greets the traveler each morning. Continental breakfast in your room is also an option. We can arrange other amenities such as massages, catering, and tours to fulfill your vacation dreams.

Waianuhea proves that remote living does not have to exclude modern convenience. Our electricity is solar generated and internet access and TV programming is provided via satellite. Clear phone service is a result of an ingenious marriage of cell phones, car kits and roof-top antennae. a'ala / "sweet-smelling, royal" / $195 A'ala lives up to its name: it is our sweet yet royal room, decorated in a different style than the rest of the bedrooms. A hand painted wrought iron queen bed is the centerpiece of this delightful little room. Shades of lavender and blue grace the walls of the bedroom as well as the bath. A view of the ocean as well as one of the pond can be seen from A'ala's windows. This room has the distinction of having its own private entry stairway as well as access from inside the house.

olu'olu / "pleasant, nice, contented" / $225 This soothing room is done in wall shades of soft bluish-green with rich blue oriental rugs. A mission style queen cherry bed is ready to take the weary traveler off into cozy sleep, while a comfy blue armchair awaits the book reader or relaxer. Outside the window are hapu'u, the tree ferns whose new shoots give us our logo, and a delightful view of the top of Mauna Kea on a clear morning. The bath in Olu'olu has a spacious shower and lovely deep green fixtures. This room is the owner's choice for "coziest."

li'oli'o / "brilliant" / $310 Li'ol'io is full of light and airiness with its shades of gold and yellow. A four-poster cherry king bed, two armchairs, and a gas fireplace make this a most comfortable room. Li'oli'o has a balcony that faces the ocean or makai side. One of the favorite features of this room is the bathroom with its large soaking tub (big enough for two!) and open shower. Li'oli'o is the most private room in the main house.

malamalama / "enlightenment" / $310 Malamalama is the largest room in the main house. It is a king junior suite complete with cherry sleigh bed, an armchair (which the owner calls her favorite chair in the house), and a twin sleeper sofa. The furnishings are shades of deep green, while the walls are a lighter green topped by a surprising sky blue ceiling. The bath is done in white tile with blue-green rope tile trim and features a large soaking tub, a glass-enclosed shower, and a separate water closet. There are lovely views from all windows of this room: to the east is the lilypond, to the south is the top of Mauna Kea on a clear day, and to the north is the beautiful blue Pacific.

kaulana akea / "spacious resting place" / $400 Kaulana Akea is our full suite. It is located out of the main section of the house thus providing the most privacy. It has a bedroom with a king bed and a living room with a queen sleeper sofa making it ideal for a family or several adults traveling together. A gas-burning stove warms the suite on chilly nights. There is a private patio area with outdoor furniture, fenced by elegant lava rock, featuring a brand-new two-person spa.

• Check-in time is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Later check-in may be possible with advance arrangement. Please inquire.

• Check-out time is 11 a.m. We will be happy to store your bags should you wish to enjoy the public areas of Waianuhea later than 11 a.m.

• Smoking is permitted outside only. We have three rooms with adjoining covered outside areas for our smoking friends. If you desire one of these rooms, please be sure to notify us in advance so we can reserve one for you.

• Children are most welcome at Waianuhea. However, we must request that all children under the age of eight be under the direct supervision of an adult at all times. There are many hazards for small children at Waianuhea and safety is a big concern for us all.

• Deposit & Cancellation Policy A deposit of one night's room rate plus applicable taxes is due upon booking. If your plans change, notifying us more than 72 hours prior to arrival will entitle you to a full refund. If you notify us less than 72 hours prior to arrival, you will forfeit your deposit unless we are able to rebook the room. Thank you for your understanding in this!
